Product description

Théâtre Garonne, 2008 is a captivating live album from the legendary saxophonist David S. Ware, recorded during a transitional period in his illustrious career. Captured at Théâtre Garonne in Toulouse, France on May 24, 2008, this album showcases the David S. Ware New Quartet in a luminous concert that spans a variety of genres, including free jazz, avant-garde, jazz, and hard bop. Despite Ware's illness at the time, the energy and creativity on display are undiminished, offering a testament to his enduring artistry.

The album features five tracks, including the two-part "Crossing Samsara," "Durga," "Reflection," and "Namah," with a reprise of "Samsara" closing the set. Each piece is a testament to Ware's unique ability to blend raw emotion with technical prowess, creating a sound that is both powerful and deeply expressive. The final mastering was done at Retromedia Sound Studios in Red Bank, New Jersey, ensuring that the live energy of the performance is preserved.

Théâtre Garonne, 2008 is part of the David S. Ware Archive Series, released by AUM Fidelity, and offers a rare glimpse into a pivotal moment in Ware's career. The album is a must-listen for fans of jazz and avant-garde music, providing an intimate look at one of the genre's most influential figures. With a duration of 1 hour and 13 minutes, this album is a substantial and rewarding listen, offering a rich tapestry of sound and emotion.

About David S. Ware

David S. Ware was a towering figure in the world of jazz, renowned for his powerful tenor saxophone playing, innovative compositions, and fearless bandleading. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1949, Ware emerged during the free jazz movement of the 1960s and became a key figure in the avant-garde jazz scene of the 1990s. His music, characterized by its spiritual depth and uncompromising vision, spans genres such as free jazz, avant-garde jazz, and spiritual jazz. Ware's bands, including his notable group in the early 2000s featuring Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Guillermo E. Brown on drums, were known for their intense, exploratory performances. Throughout his career, Ware's practice of meditation deeply influenced his music, making each of his albums a profound journey into the soul of jazz. Despite battling kidney disease for many years, Ware's passion and dedication to his art remained unwavering until his passing in 2012. His legacy continues to inspire and challenge musicians and fans alike, cementing his status as one of the most important and influential figures in modern jazz.
