Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless brilliance of Horace Parlan with "The Unforgettable Horace Parlan," a captivating journey through the genres of hard bop, bebop, free jazz, and cool jazz. Released on August 18, 2015, under the Past Heroes label, this double album spans a remarkable 2 hours and 6 minutes, featuring 20 tracks that showcase Parlan's mastery of the piano and his unique contributions to the jazz world.

Horace Parlan, born on January 19, 1931, and passing away on February 23, 2017, was an American pianist and composer renowned for his work in hard bop and post-bop styles. His collaborations with jazz legends like Charles Mingus on iconic albums such as "Mingus Ah Um" and "Blues & Roots" cemented his status as a jazz innovator. Despite the physical challenges posed by childhood polio, which affected his right hand, Parlan developed a distinctive playing style characterized by a powerful left hand and rhythmic right-hand comping.

"The Unforgettable Horace Parlan" is a testament to Parlan's enduring legacy, featuring a blend of original compositions and reinterpretations of jazz standards. The album opens with "Headin' South," setting the tone for a collection that includes both up-tempo bop numbers like "Ray C." and "Summertime" and more introspective pieces such as "My Mother's Eyes" and "Oh So Blue." The album also includes an alternative take on "Up in Cynthia's Room," offering a unique glimpse into Parlan's creative process.

Throughout the album, Parlan's virtuosity shines, whether he's delivering a soulful ballad or an energetic bebop performance. His playing is marked by a deep sense of groove and a keen ear for harmony, making each track a delight for the ears. The album also features contributions from other talented musicians, creating a rich tapestry of sound that highlights Parlan's ability to lead and collaborate.

For both longtime fans and new listeners, "The Unforgettable Horace Parlan" is a celebration of one of jazz's most underrated pianists. It's a collection that showcases his technical skill, emotional depth, and innovative spirit, making it a must-listen for anyone interested in the rich history of jazz. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a casual listener, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.
