The album's a mix of pop tunes and jazz, but every arrangement's got that extra kick. I'm really feeling the Rhodes sound and playing all the way through. That Watermelon Man riff kicks off wild, but then it smooths out, and there's this part where everyone's playing together that makes you wonder if some editing might've helped. The playing's tight throughout, just what you'd expect from these cats. Even though I'm more into jazz, I gotta say that Summer of 42 had the biggest emotional punch for me. The harmony's subtle in spots, and Greg Herbert's tenor solo work is just phenomenal. The last two tracks are all about blowing, old school style, with Woody's clarinet choruses, shout choruses, and that classic swinging feel on some 12 bar blues.
