Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of cool jazz with "The Poll Winners," a captivating album by the legendary Barney Kessel. Recorded in 1957 and reissued in 2012 as part of the Acoustic Sounds Series, this collection brings together the virtuoso talents of Barney Kessel on guitar, Shelly Manne on drums, and Ray Brown on bass. The trio, each a winner of prestigious reader polls in Down Beat, Playboy, and Metronome magazines, delivers a masterclass in bebop and hard bop.

"The Poll Winners" features nine exquisite tracks, including the enchanting "Green Dolphin Street," the sultry "Satin Doll," and the swinging "Jordu." Each composition is a testament to the musicians' impeccable technique and deep musical chemistry. The album's 40-minute duration is a journey through the golden age of jazz, showcasing the trio's ability to blend intricate melodies with rhythmic sophistication.

Originally released by Contemporary Records and remastered from the original tapes, this edition ensures that the rich, warm tones of the instruments are preserved, providing an authentic listening experience. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "The Poll Winners" offers a rich tapestry of sounds that highlight the enduring appeal of cool jazz.

  • Potential Unrealized

    3 out of 5 stars

Mastering feels off. Bennie Grundman just isn't Kevin Gray. Plus, a stereo mix isn't the best fit for a trio. It had potential, though. You should really listen to Charles Lloyd's Trio Chapel for a flawless jazz trio experience. This one's a 5-star, but it could've been so much more.

  • Jazz Turntable Jackpot

I must have hit the jackpot! Absolutely no hum and perfectly flat (just a quick dry clean). The sound is amazing! I'm really digging the "chill" jazz feel it's got!

  • Cool Jazz Gem

Fantastic pressing. Cool jazz with great sound, even with the occasional odd stereo mix. Definitely worth picking up.

  • Average Quality, Fuzzy Artwork

    4 out of 5 stars
    QexlzarqNovember 12, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

I'm pleased to report that my copy is in perfect condition. I'm confident that the slight imperfections or distortions present are from the original tape. Although credited to Stoughton Printing Co., the jacket's quality didn't impress me much. The cardboard, while thick and sturdy—far better than what's used in budget releases—isn't as high-end as that used for the Tone Poets series or the initial releases from the UMe/Acoustic Sounds Series. Additionally, the image appears a bit fuzzy, and the colors seem a tad faded. It might be faithful to the original, but it's still noticeable. The paper quality is similarly average, akin to that used in "Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section" from the same series.

  • Music Drowns Noise

Lots of surface noise too, just as others have said; The music is fantastic.
