Product description

"Willie "The Lion" Smith, a titan of ragtime and jazz piano, roars back into the spotlight with his 2000 album, "The Lion Roars." This collection is a vibrant showcase of Smith's enduring talent and his significant contributions to early 20th-century American music. The album spans a mere 49 minutes but is packed with 12 tracks that encapsulate the essence of ragtime, jazz, and boogie-woogie, genres that Smith helped shape and popularize.

"The Lion Roars" opens with its titular track, setting the tone for an album that is both nostalgic and invigorating. The ragtime medley and boogie-woogie tracks, such as "Lion's Boogie Woogie" and "Fingerbustin'," highlight Smith's virtuosic piano playing and his knack for creating infectious rhythms. Meanwhile, tracks like "Willie's Blues" and "Echo of Spring" offer a glimpse into his more introspective and melodic side.

The album also features collaborations and covers that pay homage to other greats, such as "Portrait of the Duke," a tribute to Duke Ellington. This track, along with others like "Bring On the Band" and "Roll 'Em, Rock 'Em And Weep," demonstrates Smith's ability to blend his unique style with broader musical trends of his time.

Recorded late in his career, "The Lion Roars" captures Willie "The Lion" Smith at the height of his powers, offering both seasoned fans and newcomers a chance to experience the magic of his music. Whether you're a connoisseur of early jazz or simply appreciate masterful piano playing, this album is a treasure trove of timeless tunes that continue to resonate decades after their release.

This LP was released in 1958.

About Willie "The Lion" Smith

Willie "The Lion" Smith, born William Henry Joseph Bonaparte Bertholf Smith on November 23, 1893, was a pioneering American jazz and stride pianist who left an indelible mark on the Harlem jazz scene. Nicknamed "the Lion" for his bravery during World War I, Smith was one of the "big three" of stride piano, alongside James P. Johnson. With a career spanning six decades, he remained true to his unique style, blending ragtime, jazz, and boogie-woogie into a sound that was distinctly his own. Beyond his musical prowess, Smith was also known for his larger-than-life personality and his ability to speak Yiddish, even serving as a Cantor in Harlem. His discography is a testament to his enduring influence and innovation in jazz.
