Product description

Dive into the rich, rhythmic world of Horace Parlan with "The Legends - Horace Parlan," a compelling collection of 20 tracks that span a variety of jazz styles, from hard bop and bebop to cool jazz and free jazz. Released on July 28, 2015, under the Legends label, this album offers a comprehensive journey through Parlan's musical prowess, showcasing his unique ability to blend dynamic energy with soulful melodies.

Horace Parlan, a pioneer in the jazz scene, was known for his distinctive style, characterized by frenetic right-hand phrases and striking left-hand chords, a technique he developed to overcome a childhood polio disability. His contributions to iconic recordings like Charles Mingus' "Mingus Ah Um" and "Blues & Roots" have cemented his legacy as a jazz innovator. This album features a mix of his original compositions and reinterpretations of jazz standards, each track a testament to his virtuosity and creativity.

From the opening notes of "Return Engagement" to the final chords of "Us Three," Parlan's mastery of the piano is evident. The album includes standout tracks like "Stella by Starlight," a hauntingly beautiful rendition, and "Up in Cynthia's Room," a lively, up-tempo piece that highlights Parlan's rhythmic precision. The album's duration of over two hours ensures a rich, immersive experience, perfect for both casual listeners and jazz aficionados.

"The Legends - Horace Parlan" is not just a compilation of songs; it's a celebration of a remarkable career and a testament to the enduring power of jazz. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to Parlan's work, this album offers a captivating exploration of his musical genius.

About Horace Parlan

Horace Parlan, born in Pittsburgh in 1931 and later residing in Denmark, was a pioneering force in the world of jazz piano. Despite contracting polio as a child, which left his right hand partially paralyzed, Parlan defied the odds to become a renowned hard bop and post-bop pianist. His distinctive, bluesy style is perhaps best known through his collaborations with the legendary Charles Mingus on seminal albums like "Mingus Ah Um." Parlan's discography, featuring iconic works like "Movin' and Groovin'" and "Speakin' My Piece," showcases his soulful and innovative approach to jazz. Throughout the 1960s, he was a frequent collaborator with Blue Note Records, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. Parlan's music transcends mere notes on a page, offering a profound and emotional journey for any jazz enthusiast.
