About Kurt Masur

He rose to prominence in East Germany in the 1970s, leading the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra with distinction. Masur's career spanned decades and continents, culminating in his tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1991 to 2002, where he revitalized the orchestra into a renowned ensemble.

Beyond his musical achievements, Masur is celebrated for his moral courage and advocacy for peace. In 1989, he played a pivotal role in supporting peaceful demonstrations in Leipzig, contributing to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
