Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless jazz mastery of Kenny Drew with "The Kenny Drew Trio / Pal Joey," a captivating blend of hard bop, bebop, and cool jazz that showcases the pianist's virtuosity and innovative spirit. Originally released in 1957 as two separate albums, "Pal Joey" and "The Kenny Drew Trio," this 2012 remastered compilation by Universe Remasterings brings together 16 tracks that span over an hour and twenty-one minutes of pure jazz brilliance.

Kenny Drew, a pivotal figure in the hard bop movement, delivers a dynamic performance alongside his trio, featuring some of the most iconic tunes of the era. From the swinging "Caravan" to the tender ballad "My Funny Valentine," each track is a testament to Drew's exceptional skill and versatility. The album also includes standout performances like "Blues for Nica," a tribute to jazz patroness Nica de Koenigswarter, and the playful "The Lady Is a Tramp," showcasing Drew's ability to infuse classic standards with fresh energy.

This collection is a treasure trove for jazz enthusiasts, offering a rich tapestry of compositions that range from upbeat, lively numbers to introspective, melodic pieces. The interplay between Kenny Drew's piano, Wilbur Ware's bass, and Philly Joe Jones' drums creates a cohesive and engaging listening experience. Whether you're a longtime fan of Kenny Drew or a newcomer to his music, "The Kenny Drew Trio / Pal Joey" is a must-listen that highlights the enduring appeal of jazz and the genius of one of its greatest pianists.

About Kenny Drew

Kenny Drew, the American-Danish jazz pianist, was a virtuoso of the hard bop and bebop genres, leaving an indelible mark on the jazz world. Born in New York in 1928, Drew began his musical journey at the tender age of five, studying classical piano, and by eight, he was already giving recitals. Influenced by the legendary Bud Powell, Drew developed his unique style, seamlessly fitting into hard-bop settings. His decision to move to Copenhagen in 1964 might have led to his underrated status, but it also allowed him to create a rich body of work that continues to captivate jazz enthusiasts. Drew's discography is a testament to his prowess, with notable albums like "Morning" and "Kenny Drew Trio" showcasing his extraordinary talent. His son, Kenny Drew Jr., also carried the torch, becoming an amazing pianist in his own right. Drew's legacy endures, his music a timeless journey through the heart of jazz.
