Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Malcolm Arnold's "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness," a chamber music album released on January 1, 2016, under Trunk Records. This 46-minute journey is a testament to Arnold's remarkable ability to blend orchestral elegance with narrative depth, inspired by the life of Gladys Aylward, as depicted in the film and novel "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness."

The album unfolds like a symphonic story, with each track painting a vivid scene. From the stirring "Overture" to the poignant "Finale," Arnold's compositions are performed by the esteemed Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, bringing a rich tapestry of emotions to life. Tracks like "Journey To China" and "Bringing In The Mule Trains" evoke a sense of adventure and resilience, while "The Meeting Of Gladys And Linnan" and "Jeannie Lawson Passes On" delve into the heart of human connection and loss.

Arnold's mastery of chamber music shines through in pieces like "Prelude Prison Riot" and "In The Garden At The Inn," showcasing his ability to convey tension and tranquility with equal finesse. The "Children's March From Yangcheng" adds a touch of innocence and hope, balancing the more intense moments of the album.

Malcolm Arnold, known for his contributions to films like "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Whistle Down the Wind," brings his signature style to this album, creating a work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Whether you're a longtime fan of Arnold's music or a newcomer to his compositions, "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Malcolm Arnold

Sir Malcolm Henry Arnold, a towering figure among British composers of the 20th century, was a versatile and prolific artist whose music spans a wide range of genres. Born in Northampton, England, in 1921, Arnold began his career as a trumpeter before turning his focus to composition. His works, which include nine symphonies, 17 concertos, and over 130 film scores, are celebrated for their tonal style, lively rhythms, and brilliant orchestration. Arnold's extensive output also includes chamber music, choral works, and compositions for brass and wind bands. He was particularly active in theater music, creating five ballets for the Royal Ballet, two operas, and a musical. Among his most notable achievements is the Oscar-winning score for the film "The Bridge on the River Kwai." Arnold's music continues to captivate audiences with its tunefulness and eclectic charm.
