Product description

"The Ed Blackwell Project Vol. II - What It Be Like?" is a captivating exploration into the world of free jazz and avant-garde music, led by the legendary drummer Ed Blackwell. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, California in August 1992, this album is a testament to Blackwell's innovative spirit and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz.

Joined by saxophonist Carlos Ward, bassist Mark Helias, and cornetist Graham Haynes, Blackwell delivers a powerful and dynamic performance that spans six tracks. The album opens with "Nebula," a sprawling, atmospheric piece that sets the stage for the adventurous journey ahead. "Grandma's Shoes" and "Pentahouve" showcase Blackwell's signature rhythmic complexity and the band's tight, telepathic interplay. The album also includes a tribute to Thelonious Monk, "First Love - For Thelonious Monk," and the three-part suite "Lito," which highlights the band's collective improvisational prowess.

With a runtime of just over an hour, "What It Be Like?" is a deep dive into the creative mind of Ed Blackwell and his collaborators. The album's free-form structure and exploratory nature make it a standout in the world of avant-garde jazz, offering a unique listening experience that rewards repeated plays. Whether you're a longtime fan of Ed Blackwell or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to impress with its boldness, creativity, and sheer musicality.

Ed Blackwell, born in New Orleans in 1929, was a pioneering American jazz drummer renowned for his innovative approach to rhythm and his significant contributions to the development of free jazz. Blackwell's career spanned several decades, from the 1950s to the 1990s, during which he collaborated with some of the most influential figures in jazz, most notably saxophonist Ornette Coleman. His unique style, characterized by independent playing with all four limbs while maintaining a cohesive direction, made him a major influence in 20th-century jazz.
