  • Not Sarah Vaughan

Between her singing, you can catch The Jazz Messengers for a moment. She ain't no Sarah Vaughan, that's for sure.

  • Japanese Craftsmanship: Side B Shines

    4 out of 5 stars

Just like we've come to expect from the Japanese, this release shows clear signs of careful craftsmanship. You can tell right away from the cover's glossy finish and build. It might not be the thickest or most detailed, but it certainly holds its own. Sound-wise, it's got a fairly mellow tone, so feel free to turn up the volume. I'm not super familiar with these recordings, but even at higher volumes, the soundstage isn't particularly impressive. The vocals naturally dominate, and while Rita has some dynamism, she doesn't quite feel like she's in the room with you. There are some odd artifacts that sound like tape dropouts, and it occasionally comes across as a bit forced, like the engineers are trying a bit too hard to smooth out the issues. At least on Side A. Side B is a different story. The drums aren't coming from next door anymore, and Rita has more of that presence you'd expect. The bass is a bit boomy on B2, but overall, it's a significant improvement. Clearly, much like the cover, Japan isn't blessed with the best source material. That's a real shame because, again, the effort is there, but I'd be surprised if the Dutch and US originals don't outperform this overall. One thing they won't easily beat, though, is the excellent pressing quality. It's nearly free of any surface noise, which is a relief for this quiet release. If Side A was more like Side B, I wouldn't have much to complain about, but as it is, I can't help but wonder what could have been. Equipment Used: Technics SL-1210GR Turntable, ATVM95ML Cartridge, Cyrus 2 Amplifier, System Fidelity SF-3050 Tower Speakers.
