Product description

Experience the magic of a live jazz performance with Bob Brookmeyer's "The Bob Brookmeyer Small Band," a captivating album released in 1978. This cool jazz masterpiece is a testament to Brookmeyer's virtuosity on the valve trombone and his exceptional band leadership. Recorded live at Sandy's Jazz Revival in Beverly, Massachusetts, over two nights in July 1978, this album captures the essence of a live performance with all its spontaneity and energy.

The album features a stellar lineup, including the legendary Jack Wilkins on guitar, and offers a diverse setlist of 15 tracks that span a generous 1 hour and 50 minutes. From the sultry "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and the playful "Bad Agnes" to the timeless classic "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," each song is a journey through the rich tapestry of jazz. Brookmeyer's compositions, such as "Soft Porn" and "Everything I Love," showcase his unique voice and innovative approach to the genre.

"The Bob Brookmeyer Small Band" is not just an album; it's a live document of a band in their prime, playing with passion and precision. The recordings, originally released on Gryphon Records and later reissued on DCC, are a treasure for any jazz enthusiast. Whether you're a longtime fan of Bob Brookmeyer or new to his music, this album is a delightful exploration of cool jazz at its finest.

This 1981 Reissue 2LP set is housed in a gatefold.

  • Jack Wilkins Shines Live

    3 out of 5 stars

Wow, what an incredible live performance by Bob Brookmeyer and his band from '78, with Jack Wilkins on guitar. Finding Jack Wilkins records is like finding a needle in a haystack, so I was over the moon to finally come across one. He's an incredibly skilled player with a unique harmonic approach, and his technique is top-notch. It's great to hear Wilkins really let loose on this album.Brookmeyer, too, is in fantastic form. His tone is superb, and his playing is both innovative and rooted in tradition.I just wish the production and pressing were a bit better. The sound quality is rather weak, leading to a low signal-to-noise ratio. My copy is pristine, so that's not a concern yet, but it might become an issue with more play. Plus, there's a tiny bit of non-fill that causes some odd ripping noises occasionally. But putting that aside, the album is a joy to listen to, especially since I snagged it for just five bucks at Amoeba. Highly recommended.
