His career spanned an astonishing 61 years, making him one of the longest-recording pianists in history. Backhaus was not just a virtuoso but also a dedicated pedagogue, committed to the composers' intentions and admired for his chamber music collaborations. He was a pioneer in the recording industry, joining The Gramophone Company/HMV early on and leaving behind a rich legacy of performances that continue to inspire.
