Product description

Jean Ritchie's "The Appalachian Dulcimer: An Instruction Record" is a captivating journey into the heart of traditional folk music, released on January 1, 1964, under the Folkways Records label. This 46-minute album is not just a collection of songs but a comprehensive guide to mastering the Appalachian dulcimer, making it an invaluable resource for both novice and experienced musicians.

The album begins with a series of instructional tracks, where Jean Ritchie, a renowned folk artist, meticulously guides listeners through the basics of playing the dulcimer. From tuning up to playing scales, strumming variations, and picking with the fingers, Ritchie's clear and patient instructions make learning an enjoyable experience. She also delves into various musical modes, including the minor key, Mixolydian, Dorian, Phrygian, and Lydian, providing a rich musical education.

Beyond the instructional content, the album features a delightful array of traditional folk, bluegrass, and southern gothic songs. Tracks like "Pleasant Ohio," "Old Crumley," and "Shady Grove" showcase Ritchie's mastery of the dulcimer and her deep connection to the Appalachian musical tradition. The inclusion of a play-party medley and a civil war march adds a lively and historical dimension to the album.

Jean Ritchie's warm and engaging voice, coupled with her expert dulcimer playing, creates an atmosphere that is both intimate and expansive. Whether you're looking to learn the dulcimer or simply enjoy some beautifully crafted folk music, "The Appalachian Dulcimer: An Instruction Record" is a treasure trove of musical knowledge and delight.

About Jean Ritchie

Jean Ritchie, a luminary of the 1950s folk revival, was an American folk singer, songwriter, and master of the Appalachian dulcimer. Born in Viper, Kentucky, in 1922, Ritchie was a one-woman treasure trove of near-forgotten American folk songs, many of which she learned from her family's rich musical heritage. By the time of her passing in 2015, she had recorded over 30 albums and authored seven books, leaving an indelible mark on the folk music scene. Ritchie's influence was profound, introducing the dulcimer to wider audiences and captivating listeners with her traditional folk, bluegrass, and southern gothic sounds. Her music is a testament to her deep roots and enduring legacy in American folk music.
