Product description

Immerse yourself in the world of Sigismond Thalberg with the captivating album "Thalberg: L'art du chant." This exquisite collection, released on November 6, 2020, under the BIS label, showcases Thalberg's virtuoso piano arrangements of operatic and vocal works, transforming them into stunning piano masterpieces. Spanning a generous 2 hours and 18 minutes, the album is a testament to Thalberg's extraordinary skill and creativity.

The album features 31 tracks, including the complete "L'art du chant appliqué au piano, Op. 70," a series of elaborate transcriptions of music from operas and works by composers such as Mozart, Rossini, Weber, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Schubert. Each piece is a brilliant showcase of Thalberg's ability to capture the essence of the original vocal lines and orchestrations, reimagining them for the piano with remarkable finesse.

Thalberg's arrangements are not merely technical displays; they are deeply expressive and evocative, revealing the composer's profound understanding of both the piano and the human voice. The album is performed by the talented pianist Paul Wee, who brings Thalberg's intricate and demanding compositions to life with precision and passion. Wee's performance is a testament to his own virtuosity and his deep connection with Thalberg's music.

About Sigismond Thalberg

Sigismond Thalberg, born in Pâquis near Geneva in 1812, was a virtuoso pianist and composer whose dazzling technique and musical prowess made him one of the most celebrated performers of the 19th century. A formidable rival to Franz Liszt, Thalberg began his public performances at the tender age of 14 in Viennese salons, quickly gaining a reputation as a pianist of extraordinary skill. His compositions, primarily for the piano, are marked by their technical brilliance and melodic richness, often showcasing his ability to weave intricate contrapuntal textures. Thalberg's legacy endures not only through his own works but also through the transcriptions and fantasias he created based on operas by composers like Rossini. His influence on the romantic piano repertoire remains significant, making him a key figure in the history of classical music.
