About Alim Qasimov

Alim Qasimov, a legendary figure in the world of traditional Azerbaijani music, is renowned for his mastery of mugham, a profound and ancient musical tradition. Born in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan, in 1957, Qasimov's journey into music began in his early childhood, though he formally started his musical career at the age of nineteen. His extensive training at the Asaf Zeynalli Music College and the Azerbaijan University of Arts laid the foundation for his exceptional vocal prowess and deep understanding of mugham.

Qasimov's voice is a transcendent instrument, capable of conveying the deepest emotions and timeless stories through his improvisational singing. His ability to fuse mugham with other genres, such as ashiq and qawwali, has earned him international acclaim and a reputation as one of the foremost mugham singers in the world. He has been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious International Music Council-UNESCO Music Prize in 1999, and has collaborated with esteemed artists like Björk and Yo-Yo Ma.

Beyond his solo work, Qasimov shares his artistic energy with his daughter, Ferghana Qasimova, creating a dynamic duo that bridges ancient traditions with contemporary relevance. Together, they have redefined mugham for a global audience, performing at the International Mugham Center in Baku and captivating listeners worldwide with their powerful and emotive performances. Qasimov's discography spans nine albums, each a testament to his enduring legacy and the rich cultural heritage of Azerbaijan.
