Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Karol Szymanowski with this exceptional album, released on June 9, 2021, by Les Indispensables de Diapason. This collection showcases Szymanowski's mastery of classical composition, featuring a diverse array of his most renowned works.

The album opens with the Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 35, performed by the legendary Wanda Wilkomirska, David Oistrakh, and Arthur Rubinstein. This concerto, recorded in 1961, is a testament to Szymanowski's ability to blend traditional forms with innovative techniques, creating a piece that is both technically demanding and deeply expressive.

Following the concerto, the album presents Mythes, Op. 30, a set of three pieces for violin and piano recorded in 1958. These works, inspired by Greek mythology, offer a glimpse into Szymanowski's imaginative and evocative compositional style.

The Symphony No. 4, Op. 60, also known as the "Symphonie concertante," is another highlight of the album. Recorded in 1953, this symphony is a powerful and dynamic work that showcases Szymanowski's ability to create complex and engaging musical narratives.

Finally, the album concludes with four mazurkas from the 20 Mazurkas, Op. 50, recorded in 1961. These short pieces, inspired by Polish folk music, provide a delightful and accessible introduction to Szymanowski's compositional style.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 12 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive overview of Szymanowski's musical genius. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire you.

About Karol Szymanowski

Karol Szymanowski, born in 1882, was a pioneering Polish composer and pianist, celebrated as one of Poland's most significant musical figures since Frédéric Chopin. A key member of the modernist Young Poland movement, Szymanowski's work is characterised by its exotic and richly perfumed language, reflecting his unique artistic vision. Born into a family of landowners in Ukraine, his life and music were deeply influenced by the political and social upheavals of his time, particularly the reshaping of Europe after the First World War. Szymanowski's compositions, which span various genres within the classical tradition, are known for their individuality and profound emotional depth. His piano works, in particular, are renowned for their distinctive cycles and innovative approach. Beyond his compositions, Szymanowski was also a notable thinker and educator, leaving a lasting impact on Polish music and culture.
