Music's gorgeous, absolutely adore this album! It's a fantastic introduction to country music and a brilliant starting point to discover the incredible, soulful country music genius of Gram Parsons. The harmony vocals on this record are superb, and I can't stop listening to that amazing pedal steel guitar. The stereo mix here is also very well done, everything feels perfectly balanced, and the sonic details, both big and small, shine through crystal clear, particularly the piano which has a wonderful tone to it.
This one's a bit of a mixed bag when you put it next to the RSD 2018 release. The sound quality is fantastic... honestly, one of the better Joe Reagoso masterings I've come across. His other work I've heard? Well, let's just say it's not great, haha. This one's loud and upfront but it's also really ALIVE and DIRECT without falling apart. The pressing itself is a bit annoying. It's mostly quiet, thanks to the RTI color press, but it's laughably warped. Side one is easy to clamp and plays well. Side two, though, the needle's practically reaching for the sky on the outermost grooves. I'm keeping it because it sounds amazing, looks great (even if the vinyl's design is a bit pointless), and I'm hoping the new Project vinyl flattener can fix side two's playback. There's a lot to like here, I just need to finish what the pressing plant started, haha. The RSD set with extras is better made and maybe more balanced, but this one's liveliness might suit some ears and setups better, especially if you've got warmer, smoother gear. I think the FM is the one I'll reach for most!
This album doesn't quite match the expansive, dynamic soundstage of others, and from what I've gathered, that might just be how it was recorded. In terms of dynamics, though, it's held up pretty well across different pressings and formats, even on CD. Not that this version is bad, not at all. The bass could use a bit more punch, but it's easy to give it a boost without messing up the mix, since the other instruments are so clear and separate from the lower end. Sure, the soundstage isn't incredibly deep, but you can still create some separation by beefing up the bass and turning up the volume. It's a fantastic take on an incredible album, but if you already have the FLAC file for this recording, you're not really missing out.
Absolutely one of the finest sounding albums I own! Amazing! The low-end is incredibly impactful and beautifully supports the intricate guitars within a 3D soundscape. The imaging is superb! [Tech specs in my profile].
This pressing's sound quality is absolutely fantastic, but my copy is insanely warped (bought it on release day). My brother got this one too, and his was even more warped. Just a heads-up, but it sounds amazing.
