Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless brilliance of Igor Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress," a neoclassical masterpiece that seamlessly blends orchestral grandeur with operatic storytelling. Released on May 26, 2009, by Naxos, this album captures the essence of Stravinsky's genius, offering a rich, 83-minute journey through a tale of love, deception, and redemption.

The album is a complete recording of Stravinsky's opera, featuring a full cast of talented performers and a symphony orchestra, bringing to life the dramatic and musical intricacies of the score. From the hauntingly beautiful arias to the lively choruses and intricate recitatives, each track is a testament to Stravinsky's innovative compositional style and his mastery of the neoclassical form.

"The Rake's Progress" is based on a series of eight paintings by William Hogarth, depicting the downfall of a man who squanders his inheritance on debauchery and vice. Stravinsky's opera, with a libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, brings Hogarth's vivid scenes to life through music, creating a powerful and engaging narrative that resonates with audiences.

This album is a must-listen for fans of classical and neoclassical music, as well as those interested in the intersection of art and music. Stravinsky's unique approach to orchestration and his ability to convey complex emotions through music make "The Rake's Progress" a standout work in his extensive repertoire. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a captivating and rewarding listening experience.

About Igor Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky, born in 1882 in Orianenbaum, near St. Petersburg, Russia, is celebrated as one of the most influential and revolutionary composers of the 20th century. The son of the renowned Russian bass Fyodor Stravinsky, Igor initially pursued law before dedicating himself to music under the tutelage of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. His groundbreaking compositions, particularly "The Rite of Spring," sparked controversy and ignited the modernist movement in music, forever changing the landscape of classical composition. Stravinsky's innovative style and prolific output have left an indelible mark on the world of music, making him a pivotal figure in the evolution of neoclassical and orchestral genres. From his early works to his later compositions, Stravinsky's music continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
