Goblin has re-recorded their score. “Squadra Antimafia,” or “Little Italy,” depending on where you watched the movie, is a quite lively Poliziotteschi film featuring the creative actor Tomas Milian as Nico Giraldi, a detective on the hunt for a corrupt police officer. The ‘Giraldi,’ or “Squadra” series of films were among Milian and director Bruno Corbucci’s most renowned works. The most memorable entries are probably “Squadra Antigangsters” and “Squadra Antimafia” due to their catchy Goblin soundtracks. Since the original masters for “Antimafia” are lost, the music has been skillfully reproduced by the Girodivite group, seamlessly re-engaging Goblin enthusiasts with the smooth sounds of the iconic band. For the first time, Goblin fans can listen to a painstaking reconstruction of their 1978 score in vivid stereo. While the musical style often brings to mind their “Dawn Of The Dead” music, it stands alone as a more commercial take on their usually dense horror compositions. “New York Funk” kicks off the album with an energetic funk rock track, instantly showcasing the band’s signature sound. The “Rome Chase” is an enticing piece for bass guitar, keyboards, and percussion, relaxed yet suspenseful. The slow-paced theme for “Don Girolamo” is a breezy jazz piece, contrasted by the high-energy, cosmopolitan charm of “Nico In Las Vegas.” The vibrant, high-stakes energy of the city is captured with solid electronics, bass, and drums. “Disco (for) Nico” is exactly that, a smooth synth-percussion blend reminiscent of Pino Donaggio’s “Piranha” cues. A “Night Investigation” is suitably slow and moody, enlivened by drums and percussion in a manner similar to Henry Mancini’s “Pink Panther” scoring. “In The Gas Chamber” is a dark piece for electric guitar and gloomy synth performances that intensify and twist powerfully. “Lassame Perde” is a bittersweet ballad with lyrics by Aldo Donati, a beautifully rendered song for piano, keyboards, and drums. His vocal was taken from a demo tape and arranged by Girodivite. A bonus revised performance of a cue from Goblin’s European score for “Together?,” (here renamed “Ghost Link”) offers thoughtful mixes of tinkling and squealing synths and strong rhythms. Wrapping up this recorfing is a “New York Funk ‘70 Mix” of the opening theme. Included is an informative 16-page booklet, in both Italian and English, decorated with full color photos and poster art from the film. Goblin reunited for the 1979 sequel, “Squadra Antigangsters.” Hopefully, sales of this special Beat Records project will encourage further music restorations of lost Italian film scores.
