Alright album with a couple of good tunes, light jazz funk vibes here. He's aiming to be like Jimmy McGriff, who's unmatched in this 70's Hammond jazz/funk style, but it's worth purchasing just for the album art. If you're into it, go check out these Jimmy McGriff albums instead: Soul Sugar, Groove Grease & Electric Funk, they're way better.
This album is absolutely fantastic, each track is outstanding. The pressing quality is impressive, with just a few minor crackles, clicks, and pops here and there (mostly on A1/B1), though a professional cleaning should sort that out. I also appreciate the cover art, although it's a shame we'll never know what's behind that padlock.BUT (!) what on earth happened during the pressing process? I ordered not one, not two, but three copies from two different sellers, and every single one was warped like the Pacific Ocean on a wild day. Never seen anything like this on a brand new record. Thank goodness it doesn't ruin the listening experience (too much). If it weren't such a great album and a joy to listen to, I wouldn't tolerate a warped record like this on my turntable. My cartridge's needle has to work overtime on this one. If you can find a flat pressing, it's definitely a five-star album. Love, peace & harmony
I totally agree with that take on Gimac123's misguided remark. I reckon the brother served his time more than enough and wasn't copying McGriff at all. That comment is way off base and not well-informed. The albums McGriff pointed out are fantastic, but they're more straightforward and lean towards harder funk if that's your thing. This one's got more intricate arrangements, cool effects, and a bit of a global vibe, like some of that fusion/space jazz stuff from a few years prior. Perfectly named Sophisticated Funk. Just check out that awesome effect on the bass, and all the sweet phaser making it smooth and dope. Wow.
Five years back, I picked up this album at a fair while hunting for some 70's funk, not really knowing what I was getting into. But man, I fell in love with the sound right away and now, it's definitely one of my top picks in the genre.
Totally fits right in with McDuff's top-notch 70's work. If you're a fan of that slightly futuristic CTI vibe, this album's your jam. I'm all about it.
