  • Towner's Timeless Mastery

    4 out of 5 stars

While I wouldn't exactly label myself a die-hard Ralph Towner enthusiast, each time I purchase one of his albums, I'm genuinely amazed by his creativity and musical prowess. This 1979 solo show, released on ECM, features Ralph on 12-string and nylon guitar. It's almost like being there in the crowd, witnessing this master at work for the first time. Standout tracks include "Train Of Thought", "Ralph's Piano Waltz", and "Nardis". The performance is brimming with energy and self-assurance. Ralph isn't afraid to take risks here, and the payoff is fantastic. Give "Timeless" and "Nardis" a listen for some truly daring harmonic journeys. His technique is flawless. The sound quality is outstanding. Ralph's guitars sound massive and intricate. I'm particularly fond of the percussive right hand on his nylon string classical guitar. This is one of those intimate concerts where you can pick up on every little noise from the audience, but it's not bothersome. The pressing is top-notch. Highly recommended.
