Product description

"So Long, Eric! Homage to Eric Dolphy" is a captivating exploration of free jazz and avant-garde sounds, released by the legendary Aki Takase and Alexander von Schlippenbach on October 1, 2014, under the Intakt Records label. This album is a heartfelt tribute to the iconic Eric Dolphy, featuring a stellar ensemble of some of the finest musicians in the genre. With a runtime of approximately 53 minutes, the album comprises nine tracks that showcase the raw, unbridled energy and innovative spirit of free jazz.

The album kicks off with "Les, Hat and Beard," setting the tone for the improvisational journey that follows. Each track is a testament to the musicians' virtuosity and their deep respect for Dolphy's legacy. "The Prophet" and "17 West" are standout pieces that highlight the ensemble's ability to blend structured compositions with spontaneous improvisation. "Serene" offers a moment of reflection, while "Miss Ann" and "Something Sweet, Something Tender" bring a touch of melodic beauty to the album.

The ensemble features Karl Berger, Rudi Mahall, Han Bennink, and other notable artists, each contributing their unique talents to create a rich tapestry of sound. The album's live recording captures the raw energy and spontaneity of the performance, making it a compelling listen for both jazz enthusiasts and those new to the genre. "So Long, Eric!" is not just a tribute but a celebration of the enduring influence of Eric Dolphy, showcasing how his innovative spirit continues to inspire new generations of musicians.

About Aki Takase

Aki Takase is a pioneering Japanese jazz pianist and composer who has made a significant impact on the global music scene. Born in Osaka in 1948, Takase began playing piano at the tender age of three and honed her skills at the prestigious Toho Gakuen Academy in Tokyo. Her musical journey took her to Germany, where she spent many years, and later to Berlin, which became her long-time residence. Takase is known for her innovative approach to jazz, blending it with classical and avant-garde elements to create a unique and captivating sound.

Her discography is a testament to her versatility and creativity, featuring works like "St. Louis Blues," "Hokusai - Piano Solo," and "Goldfish." One of her standout projects is "Carmen Rhapsody," where she masterfully reimagines Bizet's iconic opera, merging opera and adventurous jazz. This project showcases her ability to push musical boundaries and offer fresh interpretations of classic works. Takase's music is not just about notes and rhythms; it's about storytelling and emotional depth, making her performances a must-experience for any jazz enthusiast.
