Product description

Bedřich Smetana's majestic symphonic works are showcased in the magnificent album, Smetana: Má vlast. Symphonic Works, released on 13 December 2024 by SUPRAPHON a.s.. This stunning collection, spanning 3 hours and 5 minutes, is a testament to Smetana's genius and his profound contribution to the classical music genre.

The album takes the listener on a journey through some of Smetana's most notable compositions, including the dramatic Richard III., Op. 11, and the evocative Wallenstein's Camp, Op. 14. The beautiful String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, with its four movements, showcases Smetana's mastery of chamber music. The Festive Symphony in E Major, Op. 6, is a grand and celebratory work, featuring four vibrant movements that demonstrate Smetana's skill in crafting symphonic music.

The crowning jewel of the album is, of course, Má vlast, a cycle of six symphonic poems that pay tribute to Smetana's beloved homeland, Bohemia. From the majestic Vyšehrad to the poignant Blaník, each movement is a masterpiece of orchestration and emotional depth. With its rich harmonies and soaring melodies, Má vlast is a work of profound beauty and patriotism.

Throughout this exceptional album, Bedřich Smetana's music is a testament to his innovative spirit and his ability to evoke the essence of his native land. Smetana: Má vlast. Symphonic Works is a must-listen for fans of classical music, offering a rich and rewarding experience that will leave a lasting impression.

About Bedřich Smetana

Bedřich Smetana, born on March 2, 1824, in Litomyšl, is celebrated as the founder of modern Czech national music. This influential composer, conductor, and music educator left an indelible mark on the romantic era and inspired generations of Czech composers. Smetana's prolific career includes a rich tapestry of operas, symphonic poems, and chamber music, with his masterpiece "Má vlast" (My Homeland) standing out as a quintessential work that captures the spirit of his homeland. His notable operas, such as "Prodaná nevěsta" (The Bartered Bride) and "Libuše," are staples of the classical repertoire. Despite facing personal tragedies, including progressive deafness, Smetana's unwavering dedication to his art and his role as a cultural organizer and critic solidified his legacy as a pillar of Czech music. His contributions continue to resonate, making him one of the most renowned Czech composers worldwide.
