Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless artistry of Fritz Wunderlich, one of the most celebrated German tenors of the 20th century, with this captivating collection of his earliest radio performances. Recorded between 1956 and 1959, this album offers a unique glimpse into the early career of a voice that would soon become legendary. Wunderlich's remarkable vocal prowess and interpretive depth shine through in a diverse selection of arias and songs, spanning from Baroque masterpieces to classical and Romantic repertoire.

The album begins with Handel's serene "Ombra mai fu" from "Serse," showcasing Wunderlich's exquisite control and lyrical phrasing. It continues with a German rendition of "Troste dich, mein Volk" from Handel's "Messiah," followed by a powerful performance of "Der da thronet im Himmel." Wunderlich's versatility is further demonstrated in selections from Haydn's "The Seasons," Mozart's "Zaïde" and "Die Zauberflöte," Beethoven's "Fidelio," and Schubert's "Fierrabras."

The album also includes lesser-known gems such as "Der Waffenschmied" by Albert Lortzing and "Undine" by E.T.A. Hoffmann, highlighting Wunderlich's ability to bring depth and nuance to a wide range of roles. The collection concludes with the lively and spirited "Der Kuhreigen" by Franz von Vecsey, a testament to Wunderlich's musicality and charm.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 18 minutes, this album is a treasure trove of Wunderlich's early performances, offering both seasoned fans and newcomers an opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary talent that defined his career. Recorded by Jube Classic and released in 2013, this volume is a testament to the enduring legacy of Fritz Wunderlich, a true master of his craft.

About Fritz Wunderlich

Fritz Wunderlich, born Friedrich Karl Otto Wunderlich, was a German lyric tenor celebrated for his exquisite interpretations of Mozart's operas and a wide array of lieder. With a voice characterized by its beautiful tone, effortless production, and elegant phrasing, Wunderlich captivated audiences across the tenor range, delivering both tender melodies and thrilling vigor when the moment called for it. Born into a musical family in Kusel, Germany, in 1930, Wunderlich's talent blossomed under the guidance of his conductor father. His repertoire spanned the works of Strauss, Schubert, and Bach, among others, earning him a reputation as one of the finest Mozartean tenors of his time. Tragically, Wunderlich's promising career was cut short when he died in a fall down a stone staircase at the age of 35, just days before his 36th birthday. Despite his untimely death, his recordings continue to enchant opera enthusiasts worldwide, showcasing his remarkable artistry and enduring legacy.
