Product description

Immerse yourself in the intricate world of chamber music with Robert Simpson's "String Quartets Nos. 14 & 15," a captivating album released in 1993 under the Hyperion label. This collection showcases Simpson's mastery of the string quartet form, offering a rich tapestry of musical expression that spans a variety of moods and tempos.

The album opens with the String Quartet No. 14, a four-movement work that begins with the "Allegro non troppo," setting a contemplative yet engaging tone. The "Presto" movement brings a sense of urgency and energy, followed by the introspective "Andante." The quartet concludes with a lively "Allegro," leaving the listener with a sense of fulfillment.

The second half of the album features the String Quartet No. 15, which opens with a somber "Adagio" and transitions into the intense "Severo." The final movement, "Allegretto," provides a more lighthearted conclusion to the quartet.

In addition to the string quartets, the album also includes a Quintet for Clarinet, Bass Clarinet & String Trio, performed by the talented Fiona Cross and Joy Farrall alongside the Vanbrugh Quartet. This three-movement work adds a unique dimension to the album, showcasing Simpson's versatility as a composer.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 5 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Robert Simpson's chamber music, offering a blend of intellectual depth and emotional resonance. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Robert Simpson

Robert Simpson, born in Leamington, England, in 1921, was a towering figure in 20th-century British music, renowned for his symphonies and string quartets. A prolific composer and distinguished musicologist, Simpson's work is celebrated for its power, originality, and intellectual depth. His compositions, which include 11 symphonies and 16 string quartets, have been likened to those of Beethoven for their structural complexity and emotional resonance. Simpson's career spanned over three decades at the BBC, where he served as a producer and broadcaster, advocating for neglected composers and shaping the cultural landscape of the time. His resignation from the BBC in 1980 over funding cuts and orchestra reductions underscored his commitment to artistic integrity. Simpson's music, though long overlooked outside of Britain, is now gaining wider recognition thanks to dedicated recordings and advocacy from organizations like the Robert Simpson Society. His legacy as a composer and writer on music continues to inspire and challenge musicians and audiences alike.
