Product description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of classical Indian music with Ravi Shankar's "Shankar: Sitar Concertos/Ragas." Released on May 1, 1998, via Warner Classics, this album is a testament to Shankar's mastery of the sitar and his innovative fusion of Eastern and Western musical traditions. Spanning over two hours, this collection features 13 meticulously crafted tracks, each offering a unique exploration of ragas and concertos that showcase Shankar's virtuosity and deep musical insight.

The album opens with "Morning Love," a captivating piece based on Raga Nata Bhairav, followed by the intricate melodies of "Raga Piloo" and "Prabhati," based on Raga Gunkali. The centerpiece of the album is the "Concerto for Sitar & Orchestra," a four-movement masterpiece conducted by André Previn and performed with the London Symphony Orchestra. Each movement delves into a different raga, from the uplifting Raga Khamaj to the serene Raga Sindhi Bhairavi, the contemplative Raga Adana, and the joyous Raga Manj Khamaj.

In addition to these orchestral works, the album includes solo sitar pieces like "Raga Puriya Kalyan" and "Swara-Kakali," based on Raga Tilang, as well as the ambitious "Sitar Concerto No. 2 'Raga-Mala'," a four-movement work that further explores the rich tapestry of Indian classical music. Throughout the album, Shankar's collaboration with renowned musicians and orchestras creates a rich, layered sound that highlights the beauty and complexity of his compositions.

"Shankar: Sitar Concertos/Ragas" is not just an album; it's an experience that invites you to explore the depths of Ravi Shankar's musical genius. Whether you're a seasoned fan of classical Indian music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a profound and enriching listening experience.

About Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar, born Robindra Shankar Chowdhury, was a titan of Indian classical music, renowned globally for his mastery of the sitar. Born in Varanasi, India, in 1920, Shankar's journey began at the tender age of 10, performing with his family's dance troupe across Europe and the U.S. His virtuosity and compositions, including several original ragas, captivated audiences worldwide, making him the most famous ambassador of Indian classical music in the West during the latter half of the 20th century. Shankar's influence extended beyond his performances, inspiring countless musicians, including those from the Beatles, with whom he collaborated. His compositions for films like "Gandhi" further cemented his legacy. Beyond his musical prowess, Shankar was a dedicated teacher, nurturing a new generation of musicians. His personal life included his daughters, the acclaimed singer Norah Jones and sitar player Anoushka Shankar, both of whom carry forward his musical heritage. Shankar's contributions earned him India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999, and his impact on global music remains unparalleled.
