Product description

Steve Reich's "Sextet / Six Marimbas" is a captivating journey into the world of minimalism and avant-garde classical music. Released on September 20, 2005, under the Nonesuch label, this album is a testament to Reich's innovative compositional style, blending intricate patterns and hypnotic rhythms. The album features two distinct works: the "Sextet," a five-movement piece that showcases a kaleidoscope of subtle changes and contrasting moods, and "Six Marimbas," a mesmerizing arrangement that transforms the original "Six Pianos" into a lush, resonant experience. Performed with precision and delight by the Manhattan Marimba Quartet and other esteemed musicians, the album's 42-minute runtime is filled with pure, luscious tones that highlight the beauty of minimalist composition. Whether you're a longtime fan of Steve Reich or new to his work, "Sextet / Six Marimbas" offers a rich, immersive listening experience that underscores the power of repetition, rhythm, and subtle variation.

This LP was released in 1987.

  • Reich's Minimalist Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars

I'm a huge fan of Steve Reich's minimalist compositions from the 70s, with "Music for 18 Musicians" standing out as a peak in his career and the minimalist genre as a whole. The tracks on this album share a similar vibe; it's like organic, ambient, pre-techno tunes that had a massive impact on repetitive music. Inspired by African drumming and gamelan, the marimbas here serve up both rhythm and melody. This music puts me in a chill state, perfect for focused listening or background reading. Fun fact: for a CD, it's got amazing dynamics, sounding like an analog recording that's been digitized without extra compression—no DDD recording here. I'd totally recommend it to anyone into this kind of music.

About Steve Reich

Steve Reich, born in New York in 1936, is a pioneering American composer renowned for his groundbreaking work in minimalist music. Often hailed as "America's greatest living composer" and "the most original musical thinker of our time," Reich's compositions are characterised by their use of repetitive patterns, slow harmonic changes, and intricate canons. His innovative approach, as articulated in his essay "Music as a Gradual Process," focuses on making musical processes perceptible, allowing the listener to experience the evolution of sound over time. Reich's early works, such as those that employ phase shifting, create mesmerising new musical patterns through the subtle manipulation of tempo and timing. Throughout his career, Reich has explored a diverse range of influences, from Western classical music to non-Western traditions, resulting in a rich and varied body of work that continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
