Product description

Maurizio Pollini, a renowned pianist celebrated for his profound interpretations and technical mastery, presents a captivating album featuring works by Schubert and Schumann. Released in 2002 under the Deutsche Grammophon label, this album showcases two iconic piano sonatas: Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 16 in A Minor, D. 845, and Schumann's Piano Sonata No. 1 in F Sharp Minor, Op. 11.

The album opens with Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 16, a composition that exemplifies the composer's lyrical genius and structural innovation. Pollini's performance is marked by a delicate balance of intensity and restraint, bringing out the depth and nuance of Schubert's music. The sonata's four movements, from the Moderato's introspective opening to the Rondo's lively conclusion, are rendered with precision and expressive sensitivity.

Following Schubert's sonata, Pollini turns to Schumann's Piano Sonata No. 1, a work that reflects the composer's early romanticism and technical demands. Pollini's interpretation is both virtuosic and introspective, capturing the sonata's dramatic contrasts and emotional depth. The four movements, including the Introduzione's haunting opening and the Finale's triumphant conclusion, are performed with a masterful command of dynamics and phrasing.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 8 minutes, this album offers a comprehensive exploration of two pivotal works in the piano repertoire. Pollini's playing is characterized by a deep understanding of the composers' intentions, coupled with a technical brilliance that brings these works to life. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises an enriching and rewarding listening experience.

About Maurizio Pollini

Maurizio Pollini, the celebrated Italian pianist and conductor, left an indelible mark on the classical music world with his virtuoso performances and unwavering commitment to both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Born into an artistic family in Milan in 1942, Pollini's journey began with a triumphant victory at the VI International Chopin Piano Competition in 1960 at the age of just 18. His interpretations of Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy are hailed as classics, showcasing his impeccable technique and profound musicality.

Beyond his mastery of the keyboard, Pollini was a champion of modern composers, premiering works by Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luigi Nono, among others. His collaborations with conductors like Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim further enriched his musical legacy. Pollini's influence extended beyond the concert hall; he was also a left-wing activist in the 1960s and 1970s, reflecting his deep engagement with the social and political issues of his time.

As a conductor, Pollini played a pivotal role in the Rossini revival, notably conducting "La donna del lago" from a new critical edition in 1981. His ability to conduct from the keyboard highlighted his versatility and deep understanding of music. Pollini's career was marked by numerous awards and accolades, including multiple Grammy wins, cementing his status as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His passing in 2024 marked the end of an era, but his musical legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
