Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Arnold Schoenberg with this 2006 release from Naxos, a compelling collection that showcases the composer's versatility and genius. This album presents a trio of remarkable works: Schoenberg's Serenade, Op. 24, and Variations for Orchestra, Op. 31, alongside his orchestrations of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat Major, BWV 552, and two chorales from the Leipzig Chorales.

The Serenade, Op. 24, is a charming and inventive work that blends classical forms with modernist sensibilities. Composed in 1920-23, it is scored for an unusual ensemble of solo clarinet, bass clarinet, string quintet, and piano, creating a unique and intimate sound world. The work is structured in seven movements, ranging from the march-like opening to the lyrical "Song Without Words" and the energetic finale.

The Variations for Orchestra, Op. 31, is a monumental work that demonstrates Schoenberg's mastery of large-scale composition. Composed in 1926-28, it is a set of variations on a theme, with each variation exploring different textures, timbres, and harmonic languages. The work is a testament to Schoenberg's innovative spirit and his ability to push the boundaries of tonal music.

The album also features Schoenberg's orchestrations of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat Major, BWV 552, and two chorales from the Leipzig Chorales. These arrangements showcase Schoenberg's deep respect for the music of the past and his ability to reinterpret it in a modern idiom. The Prelude and Fugue, known as the "St. Anne" fugue, is a contrapuntal masterpiece that Schoenberg orchestrates with great skill and sensitivity. The chorales, "Schmucke dich, O liebe Seele" and "Komm, Gott Schopfer, heiliger Geist," are given lush and expressive orchestral treatments that highlight their beauty and depth.

Performances are by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Robert Craft, who brings out the full range of colors and textures in these works. The album is a testament to Schoenberg's enduring influence and his ability to inspire and challenge listeners. Whether you are a seasoned fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and engage you.

About Arnold Schoenberg

Arnold Schoenberg, born in Vienna in 1874, was a revolutionary figure in 20th-century classical music, renowned for his groundbreaking compositions and theoretical innovations. As a composer, Schoenberg was among the first to challenge traditional harmony, pioneering atonality and developing the twelve-tone technique, which uses a specific order of all twelve pitches in the chromatic scale. This method, also known as serialism, had a profound impact on the course of modern music.

Schoenberg's music is characterized by its use of motives to create coherence and his exploration of dissonance. He was also a prolific writer and teacher, influencing generations of composers, including Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Beyond music, Schoenberg was a multifaceted artist who also painted and invented. His legacy extends far beyond his compositions, encompassing his influential teachings and writings that continue to shape the way we understand and create music today. Schoenberg's journey from his early works to his atonal innovations and twelve-tone technique is a testament to his enduring influence on classical music.
