Product description

Alfred Schnittke's "Concerto Grosso No. 1 / Symphony No. 9" is a captivating journey through the intricate and evocative world of minimalism. Released on July 1, 2009, under the BIS label, this album spans a total of 61 minutes, offering a rich and immersive experience for any classical music enthusiast.

The album is divided into two main works, each showcasing Schnittke's unique compositional style and innovative approach to orchestration. The "Concerto Grosso No. 1" is presented in six movements, each meticulously crafted for a distinctive ensemble of flute, oboe, harpsichord, prepared piano, and strings. This blend of traditional and modern instruments creates a fascinating interplay of sounds, highlighting Schnittke's ability to bridge different musical eras.

The second half of the album features Schnittke's "Symphony No. 9," reconstructed by Andrei Raskatov. This three-movement symphony is a testament to Schnittke's late-period style, characterized by its complex textures, polyphonic writing, and profound emotional depth. The reconstruction by Raskatov brings new life to this monumental work, offering listeners a fresh perspective on Schnittke's genius.

Throughout the album, Schnittke's mastery of minimalism is evident, as he weaves together intricate melodic lines and rhythmic patterns to create a tapestry of sound that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving. Whether you are a longtime fan of Schnittke's music or a newcomer to the world of minimalism, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

About Alfred Schnittke

Alfred Schnittke, a seminal figure in 20th-century music, was a Russian-German composer and pianist whose innovative works have left an indelible mark on classical music. Born to a German-Jewish father from the Baltikum, Schnittke's musical journey began in Vienna and continued in Moscow, where he honed his craft and became a member of the Composers' Union of the USSR. His compositions, often associated with minimalism, span a wide range of genres, including film scores, cantatas, and concertos. Schnittke's film music, notably for works like 'Die Abenteuer eines Zahnarztes' and 'Die Kommissarin', showcases his versatility and ability to blend dramatic narrative with musical depth. Throughout his career, Schnittke collaborated with esteemed orchestras and musicians, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra. His brother, Viktor Schnittke, was also a notable figure in the literary world. Schnittke's legacy endures as one of the most influential composers of his time, celebrated for his unique voice and profound contributions to the musical landscape.
