Product description

Immerse yourself in the intricate and captivating world of Franz Schmidt's string quartets with this remarkable album, "Schmidt: The String Quartets." Released on January 1, 1996, by Nimbus Records, this collection showcases Schmidt's mastery of chamber music through two complete string quartets, each offering a unique journey through a range of emotions and musical expressions.

The album begins with the String Quartet in A Major, a work that unfolds with grace and elegance. The first movement, "Anmutig Bewegt," sets a lively and charming tone, while the second movement, "Adagio," introduces a sense of depth and introspection. The playful "Scherzo, Sehr Lebhaft" and the flowing "Ruhig Fließend" complete this quartet with a balance of energy and serenity.

The String Quartet in G Major follows, opening with the serene "Molto Tranquillo." The second movement, "Adagio," continues the reflective mood, while the "Scherzo Allegro Vivace" injects a burst of vitality. The album concludes with the dynamic "Allegro," leaving the listener with a sense of fulfillment and awe.

Franz Schmidt, an Austrian composer and virtuoso cellist, brings his rich musical heritage and technical brilliance to these quartets. His compositions are known for their emotional depth, technical complexity, and harmonic richness, all of which are evident in this album. With a total duration of 1 hour and 17 minutes, this collection is a testament to Schmidt's enduring legacy in the world of classical music. Whether you are a seasoned enthusiast or a newcomer to chamber music, this album offers a profound and enriching experience.

About Franz Schmidt

Franz Schmidt, born in Bratislava in 1874, was an Austrian composer, cellist, and pianist whose life and work bridged the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the early 20th century. A pupil of the renowned Leschetizky and Bruckner, Schmidt's musical journey began as a cellist in the Vienna Court Opera. His compositions, deeply rooted in chamber music, reflect his profound understanding of both performance and composition. Schmidt's Symphony No. 2, premiered in 1913, remains a staple in the Vienna Philharmonic's repertoire, showcasing his enduring influence. As Director and later Rector of the Vienna Conservatory from 1925 to 1937, Schmidt's legacy extends beyond his compositions to his significant contributions to music education. His work offers a rich, immersive experience, inviting audiences to explore the depths of his musical vision.
