About T. M. Soundararajan

T. M. Soundararajan, affectionately known as TMS, was a legendary figure in the world of Carnatic music and Tamil cinema. Born in Madurai in 1922, TMS began his musical journey at a young age, receiving formal training in Carnatic music and performing his first concert at just 23. Despite initial rejections due to the unique qualities of his voice, TMS persevered and went on to become one of the most prolific playback singers in Tamil cinema, with an astonishing career spanning over six and a half decades.

TMS's voice was the melodic backbone for some of the most iconic actors in Tamil cinema, including M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, and N. T. Rama Rao. His discography is a testament to his versatility, encompassing over 10,138 songs across 3,162 films, ranging from devotional and classical to semi-classical and light music. His emotive and versatile delivery made every song his own, earning him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri and Kalaimamani.

TMS's journey in music began with classical concerts in 1943, and he continued to captivate audiences with his powerful vocals and deep emotional resonance. His contributions to Tamil cinema and Carnatic music have left an indelible mark, making him a beloved figure among millions of fans.
