Product description

Sándor Veress, a prominent figure of the second generation of the "Budapester Schule," presents a captivating collection of works in "Psalmus, Elegie & Das Glasklängespiel." This album, released on January 1, 2014, under the label Musiques Suisses, offers a rich tapestry of compositions that showcase Veress's unique musical language and deep emotional resonance.

The album opens with "Sancti Augustini psalmus contra partem Donati," a choral work that draws from the rich tradition of sacred music. The piece is performed by the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra Miskolc, the Miskolc Bartók Choir, and the Hungarian State Chorus, with János Mészáros conducting. The choral pieces are interspersed with instrumental interludes, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience.

Following the choral work is "Elegie," a solo piece performed by baritone Matyas Antal. This piece is a poignant exploration of the human condition, showcasing Antal's powerful vocals and Veress's ability to convey deep emotion through music.

The album concludes with "Das Glasklängespiel," a cycle of songs that explores themes of nature and solitude. The pieces in this cycle, including "Madrigale I," "Antifona," "Canzonetta," "Madrigale II," and "Corale," are performed by various ensembles and soloists, each bringing their unique interpretation to Veress's evocative compositions.

Throughout the album, Veress's music is characterized by its rich harmonies, intricate rhythms, and deep emotional resonance. The performances are uniformly excellent, with each ensemble and soloist bringing their unique strengths to the music. The album is a testament to Veress's enduring legacy as one of the most important composers of the 20th century, and a must-listen for anyone interested in exploring the rich tradition of Hungarian music.

About Sándor Veress

Sándor Veress, born in 1907 in Kolozsvár, now Cluj-Napoca, Romania, was a composer who bridged two musical worlds: his native Hungary and his adopted home of Switzerland. Veress's early career was deeply influenced by his work with László Lajtha at the Budapest Ethnological Museum and his association with Béla Bartók, reflecting in his compositions a rich tapestry of Hungarian folk music traditions. His later life, spent in Switzerland from 1949 until his death in 1992, saw him become a Swiss citizen and continue his prolific compositional journey. Veress's works, including his evocative 'Transylvanian Dances' and his string quartets, showcase his unique voice, blending his Hungarian heritage with the influences of his Swiss environment. His music remains a testament to his cultural journey and his enduring legacy as a composer.
