Sandgrown is a deeply immersive stoner album, the kind of record that only emerges when you're so tangled up in your thoughts that the only option is to surrender, sinking deeper into your cocoon, then floating back to sleep with a mind brimming with dreams that tug at your sleeves, even as they lie scattered on the floor. Jack Cooper, renowned for his work with the atmospheric sounds of Ultimate Painting, nearly laments with a rich sense of intuitive, jangly guitar melancholy, that, like shoes filled with sand, is holding him back, but that's perfectly fine, because the paradise unveiled here is so delightfully warm, lush, and enticingly reckless that you quickly realize there's nothing better to do than to surrender, throw up your hands, and slow dance with someone you love, the wind at your back. Calling Sandgrown lo-fi would be an understatement, though in the same breath, entirely accurate, making it an album that doesn't so much sweep you off your feet, but rather, you have to dive in and carve out a space for yourself within these grooves, finding a spot of comfort as the sun sneaks in the window, rays almost tangible in the sleepy blue haze. But when "Memphis, Lancashire" hypnotically flows from your speakers, somewhere in the back of your mind, you'll be reminded of "Hotel California," and the eternal bliss of being trapped within those walls while the sweet scent of colitas drifts through the night air (trust me, just listen to the track). The record is so velvety smooth that you could drizzle it over pancakes in the morning, with the half-remembered visions created here lingering just out of reach, tempting you to give the record another spin. *** The Fun Facts: As for the album's title, for some, a Sandgrown'un literally means someone born by the seaside, while others insist you can only call yourself a Sandgrownian if your parents were born in Blackpool. However, others believe the term applies to anyone born within a certain radius of Blackpool Tower. Sonically, I found the orange vinyl to deliver a very satisfying listen.
