Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of classical music with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's captivating album, "Toussaint L’Ouverture, Op. 46 - Ballade Op. 4 - Suites from '24 Negro Melodies'." This exquisite collection, released on August 1, 2025, under AVIE Records, showcases the profound artistry of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a visionary composer whose work transcends time and genre.

The album is a harmonious blend of historical reverence and musical innovation. It features the stirring "Toussaint L’Ouverture, Op. 46," a testament to Coleridge-Taylor's ability to weave political and social themes into his compositions. The "Ballade in D Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 4" further demonstrates his mastery of orchestration and emotional depth.

A highlight of the album is the suite from "24 Negro Melodies," a collection of solo piano works based on spirituals and songs from various regions. These arrangements, orchestrated by Coleridge-Taylor himself and edited by Patrick Meadows and Lionel Harrison, bring a fresh perspective to these timeless melodies. The suite includes pieces like "I’m Troubled in Mind," "Don’t Be Weary, Traveler," and "Oloba," each offering a unique glimpse into the cultural and musical heritage that inspired Coleridge-Taylor.

The album also includes three selections from "24 Negro Melodies," arranged for violin and orchestra by Curtis Stewart and Andrew Roitstein. These pieces, including "Deep River," "They Will Not Lend Me a Child," and "The Angels Changed My Name," highlight the collaborative spirit and creative reinterpretation that define this album.

With a duration of 1 hour and 6 minutes, this album is a testament to Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's enduring legacy and his ability to blend cultural narratives with classical music. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album promises a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, born in London in 1875, was a pioneering British composer and conductor whose music transcended racial and cultural boundaries. Of mixed-race heritage, with an English mother and a Creole father from Sierra Leone, Coleridge-Taylor's work was deeply influenced by both European classical traditions and African melodies. He gained international acclaim for his three cantatas based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem 'The Song of Hiawatha', with the first section premiering when he was just 23. Often hailed as the "African Mahler," his compositions, including the Violin Concerto in G minor, reflect his unique blend of musical styles and cultural influences. Despite facing personal struggles, including poverty and tragedy, Coleridge-Taylor's legacy endures as a testament to his musical genius and his impact on the classical music landscape.
