Product description

Edmund Rubbra's "Rubbra: Violin Concerto, Op. 103 / Improvisations, Op. 89" is a captivating journey through the composer's later works, showcasing his unique blend of modernism and romanticism. Released on Naxos in 2005, this album spans 57 minutes of enchanting music, featuring the Violin Concerto, Op. 103, and the Improvisations on Virginal Pieces by Giles Farnaby, Op. 50.

The Violin Concerto, Op. 103, is a three-movement work that highlights Rubbra's mastery of orchestration and his ability to create deeply expressive melodies. The first movement, Allegro, is a lively and energetic piece that showcases the violin's technical prowess. The second movement, Poema: Lento ma non troppo, is a slow and lyrical piece that highlights the violin's expressive range. The third movement, Allegro giocoso, is a playful and energetic piece that brings the concerto to a thrilling conclusion.

The Improvisations on Virginal Pieces by Giles Farnaby, Op. 50, is a set of five pieces that Rubbra composed for violin and orchestra. These pieces are based on the keyboard works of the English composer Giles Farnaby, and they showcase Rubbra's ability to transform early music into modern works of art. The first piece, Farnaby's Conceit, is a lively and playful piece that showcases the violin's technical prowess. The second piece, His Dreame, is a slow and lyrical piece that highlights the violin's expressive range. The third piece, His Humour, is a playful and energetic piece that showcases the violin's technical prowess. The fourth piece, Loth to Depart, is a slow and lyrical piece that highlights the violin's expressive range. The fifth piece, Tell me, Daphne, is a lively and playful piece that brings the set to a thrilling conclusion.

Overall, this album is a testament to Edmund Rubbra's genius and his ability to create deeply expressive and technically demanding works for the violin. Whether you're a fan of classical music or simply looking for a new and exciting musical experience, this album is sure to delight and inspire.

About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
