Product description

Edmund Rubbra's "Symphony No. 9 & The Morning Watch" is a captivating classical music album released in 1996 under the Chandos label. This album features the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC National Chorus of Wales, conducted by Richard Hickox, delivering a powerful and evocative performance of Rubbra's compositions.

The album opens with "The Morning Watch, Op. 55," a serene and contemplative piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The centerpiece of the album is the "Symphony No. 9, Op. 140, 'Sinfonia Sacra'," a monumental work that narrates the story of the Resurrection. Through its ten movements, the symphony takes the listener on a journey from the crucifixion to the appearance of the risen Christ, blending orchestral and choral elements to create a deeply moving and spiritually uplifting experience.

The album's duration is approximately 56 minutes, offering a concise yet profound exploration of Rubbra's musical genius. Whether you are a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression. The combination of Rubbra's masterful compositions and the exceptional performances by the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales makes this a standout release in the classical music repertoire.

About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
