Product description

Edmund Rubbra's "Symphony No. 2 & Symphony No. 6" is a captivating journey through the composer's intricate and evocative orchestral works. Released in 1996 under the Chandos label, this album features the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Richard Hickox, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance.

The album showcases two of Rubbra's most significant symphonies, composed in different periods of his career. Symphony No. 2, Op. 45, completed in 1937, is dedicated to the renowned conductor Sir Adrian Boult. This four-movement work is notable for its rich harmonies and dynamic contrasts, reflecting Rubbra's early stylistic influences. The second symphony is a testament to Rubbra's ability to blend traditional forms with innovative ideas, creating a compelling musical narrative.

Symphony No. 6, Op. 80, composed later in Rubbra's career, offers a more introspective and serene exploration of orchestral colors and textures. The four movements of this symphony are characterized by their lyrical beauty and intricate structural development, showcasing Rubbra's mature compositional voice.

Recorded at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, the performances on this album are marked by their clarity and precision. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, under Hickox's direction, brings out the depth and subtlety of Rubbra's scores, making this recording a standout in the composer's discography. With a total duration of just over an hour, this album is a rewarding listen for those interested in 20th-century British symphonic music.

About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
