Product description

Edmund Rubbra's "Rubbra: Festival Overture & Symphonies Nos. 2 & 7" is a captivating journey through the composer's orchestral works, showcasing his unique voice and mastery of the symphonic form. Released in 2006 on the Lyrita label, this album spans a total of 1 hour and 17 minutes, featuring performances by the New Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vernon Handley and Adrian Boult.

The album opens with the Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 45, a four-movement work that exemplifies Rubbra's lyrical and expressive style. The first movement, "Lento - Rubato," sets a contemplative tone, while the "Scherzo. Vivace assai" introduces a playful and energetic contrast. The "Adagio tranquillo" offers a moment of serene reflection, leading to the lively and charming "Rondo. Allegretto amabile."

Following the Symphony No. 2 is the "Festival Overture, Op. 62," a dynamic and celebratory piece that highlights Rubbra's ability to craft memorable melodies and engaging rhythms.

The album concludes with the Symphony No. 7 in C Major, Op. 88, a three-movement work that showcases Rubbra's evolving compositional style. The first movement, "Lento e molto espressivo - Allegro moderato," begins with a deeply expressive introduction before transitioning into a more lively and rhythmic section. The "Vivace e leggiero" is a delightful and playful scherzo, while the "Passacaglia & Fugue. Lento" provides a profound and contemplative conclusion to the symphony and the album as a whole.

This album is a testament to Edmund Rubbra's enduring contribution to the symphonic repertoire, offering listeners a rich and rewarding exploration of his orchestral works.

About Edmund Rubbra

Charles Edmund Rubbra, born in Northampton in 1901, was a distinguished British composer whose works spanned a wide range of genres, though he is perhaps best known for his eleven symphonies. Rubbra's music, which reached its zenith of popularity in the mid-20th century, is characterised by its dramatic intensity and improvisatory spirit. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Rubbra never embraced the dodecaphonic style, instead forging his own unique compositional path. His extensive catalogue includes notable works such as the Viola Concerto in A Major, Op. 75, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 85. Despite a decline in public recognition in recent decades, Rubbra's compositions continue to captivate those who seek out his music, offering a rich and emotive experience that stands the test of time.
