Originally recorded in Sweden in 1951 and reissued on this 2000 release, the album features nine lively tracks that blend classic swing with early rhythm & blues influences. Eldridge's dynamic playing is complemented by a talented ensemble of Swedish musicians, including clarinetist Ove Lind, who adds a unique flavor to the recordings.

The album kicks off with the energetic "Scotty" and "No Rolling Blues," setting the stage for a series of upbeat and soulful performances. Standout tracks like "Saturday Nite Fish Fry" and "Echos Of Harlem" highlight Eldridge's versatility and his ability to captivate audiences with his infectious rhythms and melodic improvisations. • Eldridge's R&B Revelation

    3 out of 5 stars
    dyeeAugust 13, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

★★★★☆☆ This album captures Roy Eldridge in an unusual setting, jamming with Swedish musicians back in 1951. The first half is packed with jazz classics, showcasing Eldridge at his peak, with the Swedes providing tasteful and skilled backup, giving the spotlight to the maestro. But the real treasure here is when Eldridge and the band veer off from the standard jazz playlist. It's a rare chance to witness 'Little Jazz' transform into a sizzling rhythm and blues performer, belting out and shaking the house down on three Louis Jordan tunes: "Schooldays", "They Raided The House" and "Saturday Night Fish Fry". On all three tracks, Eldridge is clearly having a blast, joyously singing and almost putting his horn on the back burner. Roy Eldridge has certainly brought joy to jazz fans throughout his long career. But these tracks make you wonder, what an incredible rhythm and blues artist we might have missed. This hard-to-find material is a must-have for those three tracks alone.

About Roy Eldridge

Roy Eldridge, affectionately known as "Little Jazz," was a pioneering American jazz trumpeter whose innovative style bridged the gap between the swing era and the birth of bebop. Born in Pittsburgh, Eldridge began his musical journey at a young age, initially exploring piano and drums before finding his true calling on the trumpet. His sophisticated use of harmony, including tritone substitutions, and his virtuosic, high-register solos set him apart from his contemporaries and influenced a generation of musicians, most notably Dizzy Gillespie. Eldridge's dynamic and combative approach to the trumpet made him one of the most exciting and influential figures of the swing era. He collaborated with legendary bands and artists, including Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday, leaving an indelible mark on the jazz landscape. Eldridge's legacy endures as a testament to his groundbreaking contributions to jazz, making him a must-listen for any fan of the genre.
