Product description

Christopher Rouse, an acclaimed American composer, presents a captivating collection of his works in the album "Rouse: Ku-Ka-Ilimoku, Concerto per corde, Rotae Passionis & Ogoun Badagris." Released on March 22, 2012, under the Phoenix USA label, this album is a testament to Rouse's diverse musical influences and innovative compositional style.

The album features four distinct pieces, each showcasing Rouse's unique approach to contemporary classical music. "Ku-Ka-Ilimoku," composed in 1978, is a dynamic work for percussion ensemble that draws inspiration from Hawaiian culture and mythology. "Concerto per corde," written in 1990 as a homage to Shostakovich, is a powerful and expressive piece for string orchestra that highlights Rouse's mastery of orchestration.

"Rotae Passionis," a three-movement work for mixed choir and orchestra, explores themes of suffering and redemption, with its Latin text drawn from the Passion narratives of the Gospels. The final piece, "Ogoun Badagris," composed in 1976, is another percussion ensemble work that draws on African and Caribbean musical traditions.

Throughout the album, Rouse's music is characterized by its rhythmic vitality, rich harmonies, and dramatic contrasts. The performances by the Concordia Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop, are impeccable, bringing out the full depth and complexity of Rouse's compositions. With a total runtime of 55 minutes, this album offers a compelling exploration of Christopher Rouse's musical vision, making it a valuable addition to any contemporary classical music collection.
