Road Tapes, Venue #1 - Frank Zappa

Product description

"Road Tapes, Venue #1" is a captivating live album by the legendary Frank Zappa, capturing the energy and spontaneity of his performances during the summer of 1968. Recorded at the Kerrisdale Arena in Vancouver, B.C. on August 25, this double album is a testament to Zappa's innovative spirit and genre-defying musicianship. The album spans a diverse range of styles, including progressive rock, art rock, jazz fusion, psychedelic rock, and avant-garde, showcasing Zappa's ability to blend and transcend musical boundaries.

The tracklist features a mix of original compositions and unique interpretations of other artists' works, such as Edgar Varèse's "Octandre." Highlights include the dynamic "The Importance Of An Earnest Attempt (By Hand) - Live," the playful "Hungry Freaks, Daddy - Live," and the iconic "Trouble Every Day - Live." Each track is a snapshot of Zappa's live performances, filled with improvisation and a raw, unfiltered energy that only a live setting can provide.

Released posthumously on May 27, 2016, under the Frank Zappa Catalog, this album is a treasure trove for both longtime fans and newcomers to Zappa's extensive discography. With a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes, "Road Tapes, Venue #1" offers an immersive experience into the world of one of rock's most influential and enigmatic figures. The album is a celebration of Zappa's enduring legacy, capturing the essence of his live performances and the innovative spirit that defined his career.

This 2014 Limited Edition Numbered Unofficial Release LP is pressed on Yellow vinyl.

  • Zappa's Mothers 68 Delivers

    5 out of 5 stars

This was an amazing, lively performance that's definitely worth your time and money. I wasn't too keen on tracking it down at first, considering the price tag and all, and after listening to the Whiskey set, I wasn't sure I wanted more of the same from Mothers 68. Boy, was I mistaken! Zappa Records ought to keep these shows in print and even expand the series with more venues, 'cause this is what we've all been hoping for: no fluff, just full concerts. Sound quality was spot on for me.

  • Zappa's Energetic Gem

This show is a blast, full of energy and totally worth the price. I wasn't too keen on tracking it down at first, given the cost and all, and after the Whiskey set, I wasn't sure I wanted more of Mothers 68. But boy, was I mistaken! Zappa Records ought to keep these shows in print and even throw in some new ones (different venues, you know?) because this is exactly what we've been wanting: no fluff, just full performances. The sound quality? Not a single issue.

About Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa, the legendary American composer, guitarist, and bandleader, was a true musical innovator whose career spanned from the 1960s until his passing in 1993. Known for his eclectic and boundary-pushing style, Zappa blended genres like progressive rock, jazz fusion, and avant-garde to create a unique and thought-provoking sound. With over 62 albums released during his lifetime, many credited to his iconic band, the Mothers of Invention, Zappa's discography is a testament to his prolific and genre-defying work. Beyond music, he was a satirist, filmmaker, and cultural icon, often pushing the boundaries of taste and convention. His genius lay in his ability to compose complex, intricate music while maintaining a sharp, witty, and often provocative lyrical style. Zappa's influence extends far beyond his time, making him a must-explore artist for anyone interested in the evolution of modern music.
