Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, intricate compositions of Max Reger with this captivating album, "Reger: String Quartet & Clarinet Quintet." Released in 2000 under Nimbus Records, this collection showcases Reger's mastery of form and expression, blending romanticism with a distinctly modern edge.

The album opens with Reger's String Quartet in E-Flat Major, Op. 109, a work that unfolds in four distinct movements, each offering a unique emotional landscape. From the lively "Allegro moderato" to the introspective "Larghetto," this quartet is a testament to Reger's ability to convey a wide range of moods and textures.

The second half of the album features the Clarinet Quintet in A Major, Op. 146, performed with exquisite sensitivity by Karl Leister and the Vogler Quartett Berlin. This quintet, also in four movements, highlights Reger's skill in writing for the clarinet, with each movement showcasing the instrument's expressive capabilities. The "Moderato ed amabile" and "Largo" movements, in particular, are standout pieces that demonstrate Reger's ability to evoke deep emotion and introspection.

Throughout the album, Reger's intricate harmonies and contrapuntal writing are on full display, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience. Whether you're a longtime fan of classical music or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to captivate and inspire. With a total runtime of over an hour, it's a substantial and satisfying exploration of Reger's musical genius.

About Max Reger

Max Reger, born Johann Baptist Joseph Maximilian Reger in 1873, was a towering figure in German music, straddling the late Romantic and early Modernist eras. A prolific composer, pianist, organist, and conductor, Reger's music is renowned for its complexity and emotional depth, particularly his monumental fugues and organ works. Born in Brand, Bavaria, Reger's musical journey began under the tutelage of his parents and the local organist, leading him to become one of the most significant composers of organ music since Bach. His compositions, which include magnificent chorale-based and free works, reflect both the grandeur of German Romanticism and the innovative spirit of Modernism. Reger's legacy endures, celebrated by figures such as Paul Hindemith and Arnold Schoenberg, and his music continues to captivate audiences with its structural coherence and emotional resonance.
