Product description

Richard Strauss's "Also sprach Zarathustra" is a monumental tone poem, a symphonic journey inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical work of the same name. Composed in 1896, this masterpiece is a cornerstone of the classical repertoire, renowned for its grandeur and innovative orchestration. The album, released by Warner Classics in 2010, captures the essence of Strauss's visionary composition, offering a concise yet powerful rendition of the complete work in just 35 minutes.

The four movements of "Also sprach Zarathustra" are a testament to Strauss's genius, each section delving into different facets of Nietzsche's profound ideas. From the iconic opening of "Introduction - Of the Backworldsmen - Of the Great Longing" to the introspective "Of Science and Learning," and culminating in the dramatic "The Convalescent - The Dance Song - Song of the Night Wanderer," the album is a symphonic exploration of human existence and enlightenment.

Strauss's use of the orchestra is nothing short of spectacular, with the Berlin Philharmonic's performance under the baton of Herbert von Karajan bringing out the full richness and depth of the score. The album is a must-listen for classical music enthusiasts and newcomers alike, offering a glimpse into the brilliance of one of the most influential composers of the late Romantic era. Whether you're familiar with the piece or discovering it for the first time, this recording is sure to leave a lasting impression.

This 1997 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

gave this another spin with the volume turned up, and i gotta take back my first thoughts. this time, i was truly hooked, felt like the orchestra was right there in the room with me. the sound was huge, and the instruments were nicely spread out. i think i had my subwoofer cranked up more this time too, which made a big difference. absolutely stunning record.

Gave this another spin, this time with the volume turned up, and I'm taking back my earlier thoughts. This time around, I was truly captivated, it felt like the orchestra was right there in the room, with a vast soundstage and good separation between instruments. I think my subwoofer was also louder this time, which made a huge difference. Absolutely stunning LP.

  • Frustrating Classical Recording

    5 out of 5 stars
    corfliptbizNovember 8, 2025United States🇺🇸

super frustrating - no separation of instruments. feels like they just set one mic up, pressed record, and then made the LP. who knows, maybe all classical LPs are like this. but the recording is clean and has good clarity.

super frustrating - no separation of instruments. it's like they just set up one mic, pressed record, and then made the LP. who knows, maybe all classical LPs are like this. sound quality is decent though, pretty clear.

  • Classical Vinyl Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars

I've got to say, this is among the finest classical vinyl records I've ever come across. The dynamics are incredible, with the brass section really hitting you, the strings and woodwinds sounding rich and full in the concert hall, and the percussion packing a punch. The balance is spot on, featuring a deep bass and crisp high mids. And the performance... oh, it's just so, so amazing. I can't resist buying it whenever I spot it at a vintage market, giving it to friends, and I even have two copies for myself.
