Product description

In 2004, trombonist Conrad Herwig teamed up with trumpeter Brian Lynch to create "Que Viva Coltrane," a vibrant and dynamic album that breathes new life into the compositions of jazz legend John Coltrane. This album is a testament to Herwig's and Lynch's mastery of their instruments and their deep understanding of Latin jazz and hard bop.

"Que Viva Coltrane" features eight tracks, each a unique blend of Coltrane's original compositions reimagined through the lens of Latin jazz. The album opens with "Lonnie's Lament," a soulful and introspective piece that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Tracks like "Miles Mode" and "Countdown" showcase the fiery interplay between Herwig's trombone and Lynch's trumpet, while "Central Park West" and "Grand Central" offer a more contemplative and melodic approach.

The album's lineup is completed by "Wise One," "Straight Street," and "Locomotion," each track adding a different shade to the palette of sounds and rhythms that Herwig and Lynch have crafted. The rhythm section, featuring Mario Rivera on saxophone, Edsel Gomez on piano, John Benitez on bass, Robby Ameen on drums, and Richie Flores on percussion, provides a solid and groovy foundation for the soloists to shine.

Recorded and released by Criss Cross Jazz, "Que Viva Coltrane" is a celebration of Coltrane's enduring influence and a showcase of Herwig's and Lynch's innovative spirit. The album's blend of Latin jazz and hard bop creates a sound that is both familiar and fresh, making it a standout in the discography of both artists. Whether you're a longtime fan of jazz or a newcomer to the genre, "Que Viva Coltrane" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
