Out of the Life Metal sessions, four improvised drone pieces. Intrigued? Well, perhaps not. But it's effective. Don't expect some deeply moving moments from this, but it's still pleasant, cozy, and soothing. Just cozy: no murky or gloomy sounds here. The sound textures are nice, but nothing particularly special to mention. I prefer, for instance, The White One and many others, as they're more energizing. The vibe here is more "passive" and calming. Great for background music to boost focus. If you're not a Sunn O))) enthusiast and want to explore an album, maybe pick a different one, but if you're a fan, this is still worth a listen. Not exceptionally good, but good enough, and it has its spot on my record shelf. 3+/5
This purple vinyl version is spot on. Playing it on my Pro-Ject X2 with a Sumiko moonstone stylus, it's all pure metallic hum. I'm digging this more than its sibling, Life Metal, as Pyroclasts doesn't have those pesky vocals to take you out of the experience. Cranked up to the right level, this album made cracks appear in my floor and a whiff of sulfur filled the air. I'm convinced this record opens up a gateway.
Quite decent - I was hoping for superior mastering given all the analogue hype on the packaging, but the quality remains very, very good. There's a noticeable amount of surface noise on the disc, particularly at the end of Side B. Maybe this is due to me not giving it a proper clean, will revise after a few more spins. Update: Deducted a star because the surface noise didn't improve after a thorough cleaning. Side A has a lingering 'tick' sound towards the end for about 30 seconds and Side B has considerably more noise.
Can someone tell me how many of these records were pressed on pink vinyl?
My copy's just plain black vinyl, even though the label says otherwise. But hey, it still sounds incredible. The audio is powerful, and the quality is top-notch.
