Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich musical tapestry of 17th and early 18th-century London with "Purcell's London: Consort Music from Charles II to Queen Anne" by The Parley of Instruments. This captivating album, released on Hyperion in 1988, offers a meticulously curated collection of consort music that flourished during the reigns of Charles II and Queen Anne. Spanning a concise yet engaging 50 minutes, the album features works by Henry Purcell and his contemporaries, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of the era.

The Parley of Instruments, known for their historically informed performances, bring these compositions to life with authenticity and vitality. The album opens with Purcell's Sonata No. 1 in D, setting the stage for a journey through a variety of musical forms, including divisions, pavans, galliards, and chaconnes. Notable pieces include the intricate "Divisions on a Ground in D Minor" and the lively "Chaconne a 4 in G Major," demonstrating Purcell's mastery of both contrapuntal and dance forms.

The album also features instrumental arrangements of Purcell's dramatic works, such as the symphony from "The Judgment of Paris" and the suite from "The Twin Rivals." These selections highlight Purcell's ability to blend theatrical flair with refined consort writing. The Parley of Instruments' performances are marked by their precision, expressive phrasing, and dynamic range, providing a vivid portrait of the musical landscape of Purcell's London. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast of early music or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a delightful and enlightening exploration of a pivotal period in British musical history.

About The Parley of Instruments

The Parley of Instruments, founded in 1979 in London, is a distinguished early music ensemble renowned for its commitment to the performance and scholarship of 17th and 18th-century music. Co-founded by the esteemed musicologist Peter Holman and the accomplished violinist Roy Goodman, the group has been led by these two main conductors, ensuring a rich and authentic interpretation of the repertoire. The ensemble takes its name from the historic public concerts organized by the violinist John Banister in London in 1676, connecting modern audiences with the earliest traditions of concert performance. Specializing in string chamber music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, The Parley of Instruments brings together a core of talented musicians, including Judy Tarling and Theresa Caudle on violins, and Mark Caudle on bass viol and cello. Their performances are celebrated for the delicate and refined timbre of their historical string instruments, offering a unique and captivating experience for music enthusiasts.
