Incredible recording, the dynamic range is absolutely stunning and this is exactly what a MFSL record should be. It's just a step behind Crime of the Century in MoFi releases for testing my system and for pure enjoyment.
This is an incredible recording, with a truly amazing dynamic range, showcasing what a MFSL record should be. It's just a notch below Crime of the Century in terms of MoFi releases for testing my system and pure enjoyment.
Incredible recording, the dynamic range is out of this world and this is exactly what a MFSL record should be. It's just a notch below Crime of the Century in MoFi releases for testing your system and pure enjoyment.
Excellent craftsmanship and incredibly silent. Stumbled upon a copy that appears totally untouched for just a buck at a Mesa, AZ second-hand shop. The folks handling vinyl records don't seem to get what MFSL stands for, or how much some records can be worth. Stores like Goodwill hurry and almost pester staff to sell everything as quick as they can. They don't use eBay or discogs like they ought to. Goodwill tosses everything if the price tag "color" ain't sold by a certain amount of weeks. It heads straight to the garbage and they won't give back to other non-profits, or donate it. They recycle hardly anything and are truly money-grubbing pigs. Don't give them your support!
Powerful People (1974)Pressing: 3Album: 5Total: 4After giving this album a few spins, I must say it's one of Gino Vannelli's finest works, even considering his young age at the time. First off, the pressing isn't a big concern. The vinyl isn't particularly thick or flat, typical for a 70s Mexican record. However, I found it quite sibilant and not as robust as the B side, which I believe sounds better than the A side. If you come across a VG+ copy, grab it. You should be able to find it for under 5 bucks. Now, the music: Vannelli's lyrics may not be his strong suit, but who needs them when you've got Joe Vannelli and Richard Baker in your band? These two bring a powerful, distinctive sound, easily recognizable for its lack of guitars and basses, replaced by Richard Baker's funky synth-bass (organ-bass). The rhythm section, with John Mandel on percussion and Graham Lear on drums, is top-notch. The well-known tracks here are People Gotta Move, Powerful People, and Felicia, but the album offers so much more, like Lady, Son Of A New York Son, Jack Miraculous (very, very 70s vibe), and Jo, Jo, a tribute to Jimmy Croce. It's a futuristic yet modern album from 1974 that still sounds amazing 45 years later. A significant improvement from his debut album!
