Power Spot showcases Jon Hassell at the height of his 'power'. Accompanied by musicians who are both musically and technically brilliant, and featuring versatile rhythm sections, Jon crafts his winding ragas and breath-like 'scales' over a rich, thick tapestry of imagined third-world soundscapes. This music is somewhat akin to a subscription to "National Geographic World Jazz", a musical journal exquisitely depicted, sparing the listener from the need to venture into the insect-ridden, oppressively humid and perilous actualities! Coffee table adventure music at its finest.
This is a must-have album, if it ain't in your collection, you're really missing a treat. The sonic landscape that Hassell and Eno create here was incredibly impactful. You gotta check out all of Hassell's "4th world" era stuff, but this one, for me, is the cream of the crop - right up there with The Surgeon Of The Nightsky Restores Dead Things By The Power Of Sound. Ideal tunes for those evenings when you've overdone it with the charas, pop this on, cozy up, and let it carry you away. Absolutely awe-inspiring stuff to listen to.
